Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Switch) review - Tropisch feestje

Met onder meer Mario Kart 8, Hyrule Warriors en Bayonetta is het evident dat Nintendo graag oude Wii U-games afstoft en ze een tweede leven op de Switch schenkt. Ook Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze mag zich nu bij die zogenoemde re-releases scharen. Reken niet op drastische veranderingen ten opzichte van het origineel uit 2014. Wat kun je dan wel verwachten? Een gepolijste versie van nagenoeg dezelfde game. Dat is overigens geen schande, want Tropical Freeze is nog steeds een jolige platformer die met verve toont dat het DKC-concept tijdloos blijft.

Als vanouds ren, rol, klim, spring en slinger je door de levels heen. Verzamel daarbij zoveel mogelijk bananen, schiet jezelf van de ene naar de andere ton en maak zo nu en dan een ritje in een mijnkarretje of op neushoorn Rhino. Dat is Donkey Kong Country in een notendop. Tropical Freeze geeft die formule perfect weer. De authentieke sfeer wordt daarbij uitstekend versterkt door de treffende soundtrack. Zo is de keuze voor componist David Wise - in het verleden ook al verantwoordelijk voor de muziek van de SNES-games - een gouden zet. Wie warme gevoelens voor onvervalste Donkey Kong Country koestert, komt ook in het vijfde deel aan zijn trekken.

Het feest van herkenning wordt bovendien gezelliger wanneer enkele oudgedienden komen opdraven. Zo schiet de familie Kong je al te graag te hulp. Je vindt ze opgesloten in tonnen die je koopt of in de levels vindt. Diddy's jetpack is handig om een gapend gat te overbruggen, Cranky gebruikt zijn wandelstok als pogostok en Dixie maakt van haar paardenstaart een propeller. Voor de gelegenheid kan ook een vriend(in) op je rug klimmen en je een handje helpen. Voor hem of haar is dan wel een ondergeschikte rol weggelegd waardoor je co-op al snel links laat liggen. Niettemin zijn Diddy, Dixie en Cranky waardevolle sidekicks waarmee je lastige obstakels overwint.

Stardew Valley’s multiplayer is wonderful, despite a lack of challenge

The new multiplayer system is quite simple: one player hosts a new co-op farm and invites up to three other people. These people are Farmhands, and they each get a little shack on the property to sleep in. You can then farm, fish, raise animals, make friends and scour the mines - just like real friends do.

Here's how to complete Fortnite's Carbide, Blockbuster challenges

Fortnite season four is here, which means there are brand-new Battle Pass challenges to complete. But as well as the standard weekly challenges, there are a handful of brand new challenges unique to season 4.

Here are all the changes in the Fortnite season 4 map.

This year, as well as standard daily challenges, there are Starter, Carbide, and Blockbuster challenges. The Starter challenges are available for everyone, and are relatively simple to achieve. You’ll need to outlive 1,000 opponents, play ten matches with friends, deal 5,000 damage to opponents, land at ten different named locations, play 50 matches overall, play ten matches with one elimination, and win at least one match.

It’s always a tough call, deciding where to drop in Fortnite. Hopefully many arguments can now be avoided with a handy app for Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa called Fortnite Dropper, where you can let a soulless AI decide where to drop for you instead.
