As a newcomer to games, you would be hard-pressed to guess what an MMO or roleplaying game was based on the name of the genre alone. But the platformer is among the most self-explanatory. They are, by and large, games about hopping between platforms. The joy of movement, the frustration of failure, and that moment of impossible buoyancy after you hit the jump key.

They can be potent mood pieces, as in the uncanny horror of Limbo and Inside. Or, more commonly, offer a powerful dose of nostalgia, evoking the simpler games of yore. But even since the indie boom, commercial platformers still rarely present themes, allegory, or deliberate messages beyond the maxim ‘gotta go fast’.

Cheating in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is a significant problem that’s been especially difficult to avoid with the game’s explosive success since the last few months of 2017. PUBG cheaters are getting banned left and right, but there’s been little way to eliminate the waves of players taking shortcuts to get those sweet chicken dinners. A new anti-cheat measure takes aim at third-party tools, but it appears the update will also take down some visual modifiers that were previously allowed.

GDC rescind Pioneer Award for Nolan Bushnell in light of community outcry

In addition to honours for specific games, the Game Developers Choice Awards recognize a number of individuals each year for their contributions to the game industry. The Pioneer Award is given to “individuals who developed a breakthrough technology, game concept, or gameplay design at a crucial juncture in video game history.” This year, the honour was to be awarded to Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell, but following concerns from the gaming community, GDC organizers have decided not to follow through with the award.

Interviews and historical accounts with Bushnell and others from the early days of Atari suggest that the company’s co-founder helped to foster a fraternity-like atmosphere. In particular, an anecdote from Atari designer Al Alcorn in the book The Ultimate History of Video Games describes an incident where Bushnell tried to convince a female employee to join a hot tub board meeting.

Burnout developers Criterion are working on an original game focused on melee combat

Criterion are best known as the makers of Burnout (rest in peace) and some of the more recent Need for Speed titles, but lately they’ve been working quietly in the background of EA to support development of titles like Battlefield Hardline and Battlefront II. Now it seems they’re working on a brand new title again, and before you ask - no, it’s not a racing game.

Nintendo Switch binnen een jaar ruim 14 miljoen keer verkocht

Nintendo heeft laten weten dat de Nintendo Switch binnen een jaar 14,86 miljoen keer is verkocht.

Uit deze cijfers valt te concluderen dat de Nintendo Switch nu al een succesvollere console dan de Nintendo Wii U, die in vijf jaar tijd 13,5 miljoen keer is verkocht. De Switch is binnen negen maanden ruim een miljoen keer vaker over de toonbankg gegaan.

Het bedrijf komt tevens met verkoopcijfers van Nintendo-software. Zo is Super Mario Odyssey sinds oktober 2017 ruim 9 miljoen keer verkocht. Mario Kart 8 is 7 miljoen keer verkocht en The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is 6,7 miljoen keer aangeschaft.

Blizzard vs. WoW datamining - it’s “a challenge” but “kind of awesome”

World of Warcraft has a very open development process thanks to the PTR. This allows almost anyone to test almost anything that’s new in a patch or expansion so long as they have a PC that can run the game. It also means that those with the know-how, using tools and methods developed over the past decade or more, can dive into and extract everything inside - whether it’s ready to be public or not. How does that make the developers feel?

Blizzard apologised for the changes made in patch 7.3.5. but say it will be worth it the Battle of Azeroth expansion.

Ryan Shwayder, senior game designer, says “as a content creator it is a challenge. There's always this pace you have in mind, this roll out of a story, of lore, of features that you have planned. [Those] best laid plans never survive contact with the community.”

AMD follow Intel announcing silicon Spectre fixes for their next-gen processors

Update January 31, 2018:  In AMD’s fourth quarter earnings call, AMD president and CEO, Lisa Su, clarified that Spectre would indeed see an in-silicon fix with their upcoming Zen 2 architecture.

Pre-orders for World of Warcraft’s upcoming expansion Battle for Azeroth went live yesterday ahead of its release later this year. However, due a third party error, many players found they were unable to access the pre-order while others were charged the cost without their order going through.

Elite Dangerous community save charity pilgrimage from griefing

An Elite Dangerous player threatened to derail a player pilgrimage to a memorial space station but the community has managed to overwhelm the griefer's actions before it was too late.

The exploit the griefer used has already been fixed in the Elite Dangerous: Beyond beta.

There is currently a pilgrimage of Elite Dangerous players trekking across the stars to Dove Enigma, a mega ship floating in space. The station’s name is tied to the journey - Frontier Developments created the megastructure for Brandon ‘DoveEnigma13’ Keith, a 39-year-old Elite Dangerous player battling terminal cancer.

Destiny 2's Gods of Mars expansion has been leaked on the Xbox store

Update, January 31, 2018: The next Destiny 2 DLC has now been leaked on the Xbox store.

A listing for Destiny 2's second expansion seems to have been posted on the Xbox store. Gods of Mars was previously listed on the PlayStation network last month, but a new listing recently went live, before being near-immediately taken down.

Fortunately, redditor TheDarkS0ul captured screenshots of the listing, confirming the expansion's name, Gods of Mars, and with an updated description.
