This 19-year old spent $13,500 on microtransactions

A 19-year old Redditor named Kensgold has said he feels unable to buy EA’s Star Wars: Battlefront II because of his susceptibility to gambling, which has caused him to spend thousands of dollars on chance-based microtransactions.

Kensgold posted his story on Reddit about two weeks ago, after which Kotaku got in touch. Though Kensgold's habits emerged at 13, they escalated dramatically in the past three years - Kotaku say he showed them bank statements proving that he's spent $13,500 on microtransactions in that period.

The Gunsmiths: creating Turok 2's dino-gore gunplay on N64, and keeping that spirit on PC

This is The Gunsmiths, a PCGamesN series about videogames’ favourite interaction: shooting people directly in the face. There is no shortage of great games where gunplay is the main draw, so we wanted to dig down into these games’ inner workings, breaking them apart at a tool bench, and seeing the components spread out across its surface. For our third in the series, it’s the retro gibs of Turok 2.

Turok 2 was born from a singular vision: to make the most impressive videogame weapons for the time. Instead of a knife, Turok wields a dagger-strapped knuckleduster called the WarBlade. A knife clearly just wasn’t enough. Ordinary guns wouldn’t do, either. Though the game does have a range of traditional firearms, it also features weapons such as the Razor Wind - a circular, bladed boomerang that gibs enemies with every throw - and the Cerebral Bore, a homing drill that burrows into an enemy’s head, eventually popping it in a fountain of claret.

Both of those weapons were inspired by Krull and Phantasm, movies that David Dienstbier, project lead and lead designer, had grown up with. The tech at the time was cutting-edge - the Nintendo 64 allowed the team to do things that had never been seen before. This meant they could really push what these weapons could do, both visually and mechanically.

Bungie's plan to fix Destiny 2 is a good start, but must go further

Bungie have answered the bubbling discontent among Destiny 2 players - which was sparked into full-on outrage by the XP throttling controversy - with a statement on the current problems in the game, and how they plan to fix them.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 review

Naast de typische Nintendo-genres zoals platformers en action-adventures vinden zelfs shooters als DOOM en Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus stilaan hun weg naar Nintendo's wondermachine. Met de lancering van Xenoblade Chronicles 2 heeft ook de JRPG eindelijk de Switch bereikt. Het nieuwste deel in de reeks van ontwikkelaar Monolith Software is meteen een mooie opener voor het genre, maar je moet wel enkele zaken met de mantel der liefde bedekken.

De Xenoblade Chronicles-reeks staat bekend voor zijn unieke gameplay, en Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is daar geen uitzondering op. De game hanteert het gevechtssysteem van de vorige delen, wat betekent dat je het in real-time-gevechten tegen je vijanden opneemt. Daarbij bestuur je zelf één personage, terwijl de computer je twee teamgenoten aanstuurt. Je zet speciale aanvallen in en geeft je teamgenoten simpele commando's om combo's te maken. Dat klinkt eenvoudig, maar gaandeweg krijg je meer en meer opties tot je beschikking, die de boel van een stevige laag complexiteit voorzien.

Complexiteit op zich is geen probleem; wie houdt er niet van een goede uitdaging? Het probleem met Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is echter dat er geen transparantie tegenover staat. Zo legt de game je elke mechaniek dan wel haarfijn uit, maar kun je die informatie achteraf nergens raadplegen. Het gebeurt wel eens dat je in het heetst van de strijd per ongeluk door een tutorial ramt, waardoor je cruciale informatie mist. Je moet het dan zelf maar uitzoeken, wat erg vervelend is. Daarnaast kom je bepaalde cruciale informatie alleen te weten door met onopvallende dorpsbewoners te praten. Zo gaf een keuterboertje mij een gouden tip over Driver Combo's. Bedankt, beste man, maar dat had ik graag twintig uur eerder geweten.

Esports has a problem with representation. Through partnerships, awards, and simple success, the platforms, companies, and organisations associated with esports are being represented by people whose histories include racist, misogynist, homophobic, and/or transphobic views, as well as those with violent or deceptive pasts. You only need to look to the recent Esports Industry Awards, one of the events with the largest profile in the business, to see examples of this.

Everyone attending, including the media and game makers themselves, were there to celebrate the best esports has to offer and everything great that has happened during the year just past - which is well-deserved considering how quickly the industry has grown, supporting more events, players, and talent each year. At the 2017 event, the winner of Esports Journalist of the year was Duncan ‘Thorin’ Shields, a journalist who has worked for the Eleague, DreamHack, and is currently working exclusively for Dot Esports.

Doomfist can break things again thanks to a patch on the Overwatch PTR

Blizzard have released a patch to the Public Test Realm (PTR) that focuses on improving the man who punches like a steaming train: Doomfist. Many of these changes, like making his attacks break breakables again, should make him a more satisfying character to play, but there’s also a push to make the effects of his actions more predictable.

Overwatch’s principle designer, Geoff Goodman, explains in a blog post that the patch improves wall slamming, saying that “The wall slamming logic has also been simplified so players should find that a 45 degree impact angle is the cutoff between the target being slammed into the wall, or sliding off.” This simplification makes it much easier to understand the repercussions of your moves.

Dokkaebi was named for a creature from Korean mythology, a goblin with the ability to possess inanimate objects - a natural fit for the operator’s hacking ability. A ton of design iterations came in bits and pieces to define her final look, but the one thing that stuck around until the end were the glasses. Not exactly tactical, but you’ve gotta have that hacker look.

Bold RTS Riot: Civil Unrest explores the politics and humanity behind real-world protests

Five years ago, Leonard Menchiari - formerly an editor and cinematographer at Valve - found himself facing a line of heavily armoured police. The encounter took place at the NO-TAV riots in Val Susa, Italy, where Menchiari stood alongside fellow environmentalists and other upset locals to protest against the construction of a high-speed railway line in the area. As the standoff became more aggressive, the casually dressed gathering clashed with the riot police who responded with tear gas and water cannons.

During the confrontation, a number of people were injured on both sides. But it wasn’t projectiles or jets of high-pressure water that struck Menchiari that day, rather the realisation that the police, while certainly better organised, were just as afraid as he was.
