The World Health Organization have plans to add a “gaming disorder” to their list of recognized mental health conditions. A draft of the 2018 edition of their diagnostic manual features gaming disorder listed alongside gambling disorder as conditions “due to addictive behaviours.”

Gaming disorder here is qualified by “impaired control over gaming,” “increasing priority given to gaming to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities,” and “continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences.” Behaviour would need to be evident over the course of a year in order for a diagnosis to be made, except in cases of extreme severity.
