Retrofiel - Grand Theft Auto 4 is zowel de beste als de slechtste GTA

Vroeger, toen alles beter was... Toen Lindsay Lohan nog geld verdiende met acteren in plaats van geld uitgeeft aan hopeloze rechtszaken tegen Rockstar. In Retrofiel gaat een van de redacteurs van Eurogamer Benelux terug naar de goede oude tijd. Met het oog op het tienjarig jubileum van Grand Theft Auto 4 wil Carl zijn favoriete GTA-game in het zonnetje zetten, maar werpt Yvo een schaduw over zijn oordeel.

Sterren komen, sterren gaan, alleen Rockstar blijft bestaan. Met Grand Theft Auto 4 leverde de studio wat mij betreft hun absolute meesterwerk af. Deel drie veranderde games voor eeuwig en altijd, Vice City wist de beste sfeerschepping in een game ooit neer te zetten, en San Andreas bracht een van de interessantste gamewerelden ooit. Maar voor mij is het simpel: Grand Theft Auto 4 zet de stijgende lijn voort door alle gebreken van de reeks van tafel te vegen en simpelweg de beste game af te leveren.

Grand Theft Auto 4 de beste game in de serie? Ik dacht het niet. Sterker nog, voor mij is dit duidelijk de minste van al. Elke GTA is namelijk de overtreffende trap van zijn voorganger, maar Grand Theft Auto 4 verstoort dat feestje en doet juist een stapje terug. Het is zelfs de eerste (en tevens enige) GTA waarbij ik voortijdig ben afgehaakt.
