Fortnite’s new Close Encounters LTM is live as you’re reading this - or rather, it was supposed to be, but some unspecified issue has lead to the mode quickly leaving rotation just a few minutes after going live. While you’re waiting for the jetpack and shotgun-focused mode to return, Epic’s enabled Solid Gold as a consolation.
Once it returns, Close Encounters will replace all weapon drops with shotguns. Jetpacks are also more plentiful, and you can grab those flying items and heavy shotguns from chests and supply drops. The storm also gets gets faster in the mid and late game, and Epic says typical match length is around 15 minutes, which should help provide those titular close combat situations.
Never settle for less - play the best games on PC.
Epic hasn’t said exactly what the nature of the issues are which have brought the mode down, but commenters under the original Reddit announcement have complained of solo queues disappearing and inappropriate ammo drops spawning across the map. These sorts of issues are often resolved quickly, but there’s currently no ETA for a return.
Fortnite has quite a few additional updates on the way, including the Playground LTM which seems to serve as the first step toward a permanent practice arena.
