Onrush review - Adrenalinerush van een racegame

In deze Onrush review neemt Carl de nieuwe arcade-racer van Codemasters onder de loep. Zit er onder de motorkap een indrukwekkende game, of bijt Onrush in het stof?

Evolution Studios is dood, lang leve Evolution Studios! Na de gloriedagen van de WRC-games en Motorstorm, beet de studio zijn tanden stuk op Driveclub. Vanwege de moeilijke ontwikkelingsperiode en dramatische launch van die game stelde Sony de studio te koop. Daar houdt het verhaal niet op, want onder de vleugels van race-experts Codemasters vormt Onrush de comeback van de studio. En wat voor een. Door terug te grijpen naar de kern van arcade-racers maar er tegelijk een creatieve moderne draai aan te geven, is Onrush een memorabele en opwindende racegame - hoewel het eigenlijk allesbehalve een racegame is.

Onrush draait namelijk niet om als eerste over de eindmeet geraken. In plaats daarvan scheuren twee teams van zes over circuits om opdrachten te voltooien. In de Overdrive-modus wint bijvoorbeeld het team dat de meeste 'boost' spendeert, die je krijgt door op andere spelers in te beuken en gigantische sprongen uit te voeren. Om in Lockdown te zegevieren, moet je dan weer als team een bewegende zone bezetten of het andere team eruit beuken. Elke modus is objective-based en in team, een beetje zoals Overwatch. Juist ja: niet bepaald typisch voor een racegame.
